General Information about Limassol

Limassol, with a population of around 200,000 people, is the second largest city of Cyprus. Crime rates are very low compared to other european destinations, thing which makes it an ideal family location to live and work. Health services are also taken very seriously. Limassol Municipality has dedicated staff that take care of cleaning streets, buildings and public places in general.

Weather in Limassol

Limassol offers a mild meditterranean weather, enjoyable throughout the year. Like in the rest of Cyprus, Limassol offers a lot of enjoyable sunshine.

Summer starts from middle of May and goes to the middle of October. This gives a lot of time to visit the beautiful Limassol beaches and since the city offers the longest combined beach line of the rest of the cities of Cyprus, it also means easy and fast access to the sea for the Limassol property owners.

October and November are the main Autumn months and these bring with them cooler evenings. Many people still like to swim even until November.

December and January are the Winter months but you will still get 6 hours of nice sunshine every day.

Early Spring days start from end of January - beginning of February. Spring is wonderful as it brings with it a lot of green that surrounds or covers the many ancient ruins around Limassol.

The Limassol People

Getting Around in Limassol

It is easy to get around in Limassol as it is a relatively small city and also very easy to learn. Limassol has 4 main roads almost running in parallel and crossing the city from West to East. Starting from the South part of the city and goind North we have:

  • The avenue running parallel to the beach. Starts from the small roundout of Limassol old port going (always following the coast line) outside of Limassol. Its naming is separated into a number of parts: Spyrou Araouzou then Christodoulou Hadjipavlou, then Octovriou 28.
  • The main Limassol avenue: Makarios III Avenue. Running almost through the center of the city.
  • The relatively new, Spyros Kyprianou Avenue (otherwise known as Makedonias Avenue) which again crosses the city from West to East.
  • And finally, the highway, which, with its newly completed bridges, allows traffic going from Paphos to Nicosia (and vice versa) to bypass the 6 round abouts.

You will never find a huge traffic in Limassol. Especially, now, with the introduction of the highway bridges, bottlenecks are reduced to a minimum.

Even if you don't have your own car to travel around Limassol there is a very good taxi system as you can find a taxi almost instantly. There is also a moderate bus service running from 7am to 7pm with busses crossing the town from one end to the other.

Places to Visit Around Limassol

Limassol carries with it many years of history. There are a large number of places to see and visit as the Limassol district is not only comprised from the town but also from a large number of villages surrounding it, going almost half the way to Paphos and half the way to Larnaca.

Some of the most well-known places to visit are:

  • Wine Museum (leads to museum's website): Carrying with it more than 5,500 years of history it definitely makes it a place worth visiting.
  • Amathus Ruins: Amathus is flagged as one of the ancient kingdom cities of Cyprus and its ruins date back as far as the 9th century BC. A very intriguing place to visit indeed.
  • Curium Amphitheatre: situated on a mountain top over Episcopi's main public beach area, just off the old coast road between the city of Paphos and Limassol, is the perfect place to go for open-air theatrical and musical performances of all kinds.
  • Kolossi Castle: A full standing castle in Kolossi village with history as far back as King Richard the Lionhearted. Another must-see monument.
  • Kykkos Monastery (leads to monastery's website): One of the most famous as well as the wealthiest monastery of Cyprus, founded at the end of the 11th century. Will offer you some relaxing moments away from everything else.
  • The tomb of Archbishop Makarios III: One of the most important and most respectable faces in the history of Cyprus.
  • The Castle of Limassol (leads to castle's website): This castle dates back as far as 1228 A.C and is another must-see.

Limassol Beaches

Limassol Nightlife

For those who like to party, or just to chill out with friends and have some fun, bars and pubs in Limassol stay open until 2am. And there are lots of them. Most of these have big screens for watching sports events (mainly).

The Limassol Tourist Area boasts a number of night clubs with varied types of music from house, trance, R & B to more classics of the 80s - 90s and also Latin music. There is also at least one gay nightclub.

Limassol is the city that offers a night life to either give you a place to relax and have a chat with friends or party wild until the early morning hours and drink to a point where you won't remember what you did last night!

Shopping in Limassol

  • Aneksartisias Street: the highest concentration of shops in the city. You can virtually find anything here.
  • St Andrew's Street: this is mostly for tourists, selling souvenirs, jewellery, maps, cards and other items.
  • Makarios Avenue: offers mostly designer shops dispersed throughout the avenue.

Another area worth mentioning for shopping is the tourist area of Limassol which has a good number of shops.
