Last weeks announcement of plans to build a Disneyland style theme park in the town of Pyla, in Cyprus, could mean big business for tourism. Russian based investors, Boema Group, have applied for permission to build an €800million theme park which will be fulfilled by Greek mythology and Cypriot history. The proposed theme park will cover an area of approximately 600 donums (around 80 hectares) and include such attractions as water park, cinemas, theatres, auditoriums, stadiums, a ski centre, waterfalls, adventure parks, shops, spas, saunas, Roman baths and a museum. Luxury hotel for 1000 room will also be available. Despite the cautious nature of some government ministers giving the project the final seal of approval, Christodoulos Papadopoulos, director of Boema in Cyprus, believes that the deal his company has struck with Russian tour operators, which plan to deliver an extra 500,000 holidaymaker from Eastern Europe alone and also create over 3000 jobs and boosting tourism island-wide, if the park does go ahead, its gates are due to open in 2012, when Cyprus will receive the six-month presidency of the European Union.
